Q&A 013 – Benjamin Brunn

"Apparently, I have nothing to hide...."

We are extremely pleased to share with you our latest interview, this time with Smallville Records, Third Ear and Wake Up’s contributor Benjamin Brunn. The German producer is the DJs’ DJ, the producers’ producer and a very humble person (in our opinion). Often he makes music with one of our favourite artists Move D. Enjoy……

First of all, as we will be talking about ‘downstairs’, what’s the first thing that comes in to your mind when you hear that word?

It reminds me of a recurring childhood dream in which I glide down the stairs, belly down, arms spread like wings, very slowly. We lived on the first floor and I always hovered down the same flight of stairs to the ground floor.

Talking about music and your work, tell us about your favourite downstairs venue you’ve played / been to, whether in London or elsewhere. Why was it special?

I am not a big fan of basement venues, because it usually means low ceilings. However, I quite loved playing at Bar A Bar on Stoke Newington Road in London.

What differences would you make to your set for a basement gig compared to an outdoor / terrace / festival one?

Certainly, the more basement, the harder.

Do you get a different feeling whilst playing in such different venues?

A bit depressive.

Could you tell us about three of your most essential ‘downstairs’ tracks?

Green Velvet – Flash (Carl Craig’s Paperclip People Mix)

Laurent Garnier – Crispy Bacon

Porter Ricks – Port Gentil

Talking a little bit more about yourself, what’s the most unique or interesting experience you’ve ever had while below ground level?

I nearly caught burglars in our basement. It’s a long story why they got away and I could still kick myself when I think of it.

If you had a basement, what would you hide in it?

I have a basement and there are things I don’t need. Apparently, I have nothing to hide.

And finally something that involves your creativity. Could you draw anything that comes into your mind when you think about ‘downstairs’?

There you go……
