Q&A 007 – A1 Bassline / Christian Piers
“With the right people there the night will always be special.”
For our seventh interview we are joined by Brighton’s talented Christian Piers aka A1 Bassline. Christian runs the Source Unknwn imprint under his real name and has released on Curle as well as being part of Laszlo Dancehall alongside Leon Vynehall. For his A1 Bassline moniker it has been a great 2014, with releases for the likes Nofitstate and Step Recordings and this 2015 started with his quality EP on FINA White (which we’ve previously reviewed). So we sat and asked A1 Bassline a few questions about some of his “downstairs” experiences.
First of all, as we will be talking about ‘downstairs’, what’s the first thing that comes in to your mind when you hear that word?
My old studio was in my basement of my apartment; luckily enough I have moved now and tend to see more daylight.
Talking about music and your work, tell us about your favourite downstairs venue you’ve played / been to, whether in London or elsewhere. Why was it special?
I recently played an in store at rye wax for inperspective records. I really like the idea of a venue/recordshop/café. The space is really nice and it was good to see some friends I haven’t seen in years.
What differences would you make to your set for a basement gig compared to an outdoor / terrace / festival one? Do you get a different feeling whilst playing in such different venues?
I tend to play more basement type clubs so they feel more natural but wouldn’t stray too much away from what I play.
Do you get a different feeling whilst playing in such different venues?
Yeah sometimes, but I think it’s more about the people who come. With the right people there the night will always be special.
Could you tell us about three of your most essential ‘downstairs’ tracks?
Skudge – ‘Melodrama’
Omar S – ‘Untitled’ – 998
Vtothed – “NYC Space Sessions Pt. 1 (Edward Remix)
Talking a little bit more about yourself, what’s the most unique or interesting experience you’ve ever had while below ground level?
Sea Life center.
And finally something that involves your creativity. Could you draw anything that comes into your mind when you think about ‘downstairs’?
That’a sketch of black market record logo.
