Downstairs Exclusive Premiere – Jamie Trench ‘Red Wigs, Red Walls’ – Act Natural
“deep stuff that rounds off an excellent EP in great fashion”
The Roots For Bloom head has had a string of successful releases over the last few year on the likes of Tsuba, VIVa Music, Kaluki and Music is Love, his latest EP for Act Natural continues his own brand of disco-infused house and techno. Join him on a journey through ‘A Night In Paris’.
The title track sets the theme for this release, fat thumping kicks and chopped vocal samples combined with occasional key chords. The bass line brings to mind old school soulful deep house records, there is even a bit of synth organ snuck in for good measure. An irresistible groove.‘Come Back And Let Me Love You’ opens with similar large kicks but with a softly rolling crescendo of synths following in afterwards. Trench moves effortlessly from section to section adding and peeling back layers creating a feeling of tension until the vocals kick in with beautiful emotional soulfulness. The groove by then has slid into a tight, funky shuffle. A track gently tugs on your earlobes and leads you to the dancefloor. ‘The Whistle’ takes the tempo up a slight notch, liquid sounds contrast the sharp claps and chopped samples. Hip-hop like basslines and grooves will keep you moving and shuffling to this one.
‘Red Wigs, Red Walls’ is a large, foot stomper right from the off, with tight rhythms and a straight four beat that will make your teeth rattle. An undercurrent of ethereal sounds filters through as more and more percussion slowly adds into the mix. When the main groove finally kicks in, it is beautiful in its simplicity, a bass line that slithers and slides around and the occasional deep synth stabs complement each other well. Properly deep stuff that rounds off an excellent EP in great fashion.
