Cecil ‘Depths EP’ – Black Key Records
“will definitely make you shake your head”
If you are into rough and soulful Deep House then you should check out British imprint Black Key. Their new EP comes from Leicester producer Cecil (1/3 of the minds behind Artful Division) and it perfectly showcases what the label has been doing since its inception. With contributions from the likes of Iron Curtis and Dudley Strangeways they have slowly created a pretty healthy and unique catalogue. Their A&R choices carefully mix music influenced by both USA and UK sounds with Straight 4/4 beats, soulful chords, wobbly bass-lines and open hat grooves, Cecil’s ‘Depth EP’ being a great collection to showcase this.
Starting from the title track with its simple but effective melodies and moving toward ‘Trip’ – a deeper uplifting cut which splices genres, merging current UK house melodies with rougher filtered Chicago grooves. ‘Right Now’ will definitely make you shake your head if played at the beginning of a big warehouse night while the Matthew Burton & Kate Rathod remix of ‘Trip’ uses more sophisticated and intricate drum patterns, a great example of what the British producers are making using parts of the massive new “micro” movement and fusing them with their musical trademarks.
